A few weeks ago we were asked to replace Amy Winehouse at a festival in Europe. We agreed to fill in for her, and were curious as to why she cancelled the date. We confirmed the show and soon heard about her fateful concert in Belgrade and the subsequent cancellation of her entire tour. I remembered running into her father a couple of years ago in the lobby of Universal Music. I was reminded of the frustration, pain and dysfunction that is such a big part of the life of the addict, and unfortunately everyone else involved.

I didn’t know Amy personally, but her recent passing hits close to home as the disease of addiction is a very familiar part of my life. It’s a brutal and savage condition that wreaks havoc not only on the addict but those around them as well.

Having played over 250 shows since our last album came out, we understand all too well the challenges of life on the road. We have been touring for about two years now and it can be tough. I couldn’t imagine it in the midst of an active addiction. I certainly would not be able to do it.

It seems that many in the press had no problem acting as though her disease were as trivial as the latest « hot beach bods » spread. Maybe the next time someone exhibits the classic behavior of an addict in trouble, rather than using it as tabloid fodder, more energy could be spent attempting to help the person. Laughing at the behavior of a person in the throes of addiction, or dismissively treating it as entertainment, is no less unforgiveable than making fun of someone who has begun to deteriorate from the damages of any other chronic and debilitating disease.

I understand they have not confirmed the cause of death but it seems obvious that she suffered deeply for many years. I feel for her and those closest to her, for the pain of these years and for this tragic ending. It’s a heartbreaking loss, not just of an incredibly talented artist, but of a beautiful and blessed young woman in the beginning of her life.

Jared Leto Addresses 30 Seconds To Mars’ Future

In recent months, members of 30 Seconds To Mars‘ Echelon have been in a panic over rumors that their favorite band may be calling it quits once they wrap their (seemingly endless) Closer to the Edge tour at year’s end.

Of course, the band themselves haven’t exactly done much to assuage those fears, making a few off-handed comments (link) about the split in an interview with MTV Canada, and then following them up by going full non-committal to MTV Radio.

So, when MTV News spoke to frontman Jared Leto last week about 30STM’s three VMA nominations, we decided to get him to answer the question once and for all. And while, he remained fairly obtuse about everything, he did admit that the band is thinking very hard about their future … and, yes, he understands that their lack of a firm plan has freaked his fans out.

« Yeah, and I mean, it’s understandable why people would [think] that, » Leto said. « We’ve been really thinking about the future, and life and opportunities and choices and, really, I think when we’re done with this album cycle, then we’ll be ready to address the future.

« It’s been such an incredible, insane, crazy ride, » he continued. « It’s been almost two years, all around the world more than a couple times. This global typhoon of shows and videos and creativity and madness. So, we need a little bit of time — I need a little time to catch my breath. »

But regardless of whatever the future may bring, Leto said that he and his bandmates have also been spending a lot of time reflecting on their past and the long journey they’ve embarked on with their This Is War album. It started nearly three years ago, with 30STM embroiled in a lawsuit with their label, has taken them around the world, and has landed them nominations in two years’ worth of VMA shows. So, if they do decide to walk away, they’ll do so with heads held high.

« It’s been a long, slow battle. A global battle. It’s incredible, » Leto said. « My brother, Tomo [Milicevic] and I were looking at photos, and we look like kids compared to now. So much life has happened since then, and we definitely feel very proud of the adventure so far. Very grateful. »

Of course, he couldn’t think of a better way to go out than with a trio of triumphs at the VMAs (the band’s « Hurricane » clip is up for Best Direction, Cinematography and Editing.) Which is why Leto’s not above doing some hard-core campaigning, either.

« But the nice thing about these video nominations, they certainly would be a great way to say goodbye, wouldn’t they? » he laughed. « I mean, winning all three would be a pretty nice way to go out. »

“Right now, I am more into movies soundtracks, especially Passion, Peter Gabriel’s music for Martin Scorcese’s movie The Last Temptation Of Christ. It is beautiful, very atmospheric, with a beautiful haunted ambience. If I come to direct a movie someday, I’ll probably compose the music for it…”

A Book:
“What I read is a little bit specific. I just finished The Demon under the Microscope by Thomas Hager, a book about antibiotics since their creation. Before that I read a story about the foreign politic in the Caribbean which explains how the United States supported dictatorship in Haiti or in Cuba.”

Magazines:
“While touring, I have time to read in planes or at night before going to sleep. I really like The Economist and National Geographic. They open my eyes on what is going on in the world.”

Two Movies:
“As I am always on the road, I don’t really have the time to go to the movies. However, I watched Enter the Void by Gaspar Noé in DVD and I really liked it. I loved Irréversible. In another genre, Gomorra is the best movie I have seen lately. Really intense.”

01) How long have you been following 30 Seconds to Mars?

Since 2004. A friend I had at the time introduced me to Capricorn and the music video. I was instantly taken by it, and wanted more. Self-Titled will always be special for that reason – every song really made me think a little more, opened my perspective of interpretation and things like that. They weren’t touring at the time, so I didn’t get to see them live in concert until nearly a year later. I drove 6 hours, two states over to see them in Arizona, and then went to as many shows as possible. It was a different time then, like it is now, and it’s been a really special thing to see MARS grow the way they have.

2) How is it touring with MARS?

It’s exhausting! Haha. Not in a bad way – I’m a person who likes to constantly be busy, doing something, anything, and you definitely keep busy while on the road. I’d never done tour work before, so being dropped in the middle of South Africa and working the same day I arrived was a challenge for me, but one I welcomed with open arms. It’s not as glamorous as people may think – you work long hours, you have to find time to sleep, and things don’t always go smoothly… but it’s part of the entire package. Being able to see different countries, meet different people, see so many passionate souls in one place makes up for it, and then some. You really get a taste of life while traveling. There’s always something going on. With the exception of Emma, I was also the only girl in the crew… Traveling with 12+ guys at a time is a lot to keep up with, but I think I handled it well.

3) What is your working relation with MARS and other members of the crew?

While I worked on the Hurricane 2010 tour, I was part of the VIP Experience known as Golden Ticket To Mars. I helped fellow Echelon, as well as regular fans, experience the show from a different viewpoint (different locations in the venues), as well as helped with their Meet & Greets. I also took photos to be used in Transmission, as well as for my personal collection. Otherwise, my work with MARS has been helping The Hive (promotion, brainstorming, photos, working with fellow Echelon), and other online facets of the MARS universe, and anything they may need when they’re actually in town doing shows or appearances.

4) In your opinion, has anything changed (if it has) in the relation among the members of the Echelon and between the Echelon and MARS over the years?

This is tricky. I think it really depends on the Echelon themselves, not necessarily the ENTIRE fanbase / machine that is the Echelon. I think things between the Band and the fans have opened up a little more, in that it may be harder to see the Band after shows, just talk to them on a personal level like many did before 2006, but when it happens, it’s very much like “the old days”. Like many, I knew that if the Band got big enough, simple pleasures and allowances like that would inevitably fade away, but I can honestly say it’s not a dead concept. Sure, there is VIP treatment now, sure, people can get their ways of meeting them directly with benefits, but I’d like to believe that things have just expanded from the way they were before it all went completely global. I know a lot of older fans think the traditions of Echelon have changed, but I don’t necessarily believe that – I think they’ve grown with the Band, and people can either accept and adapt, or abandon the concept. As someone who has stood by them since the first day I discovered them, it hasn’t “changed” for me, it’s grown. That’s where divide happens within the Echelon: people who choose to accept and adapt differ a bit from those who feel things are completely different. “Growth” is the keyword, to me. MARS will never be exactly like they were, because things and people change. Surely we don’t expect to be the same people we are as individuals after a period of time, after you’ve had time to grow and shape with your environment, with the things you learn, and the life you begin to lead – you will never be the same person you were at 18 when you’re 28, but there will always be some things that never change, like the true concept and meaning of Echelon – promoting, helping the Band, enjoying the music. You can still appreciate the past, though, and remember it fondly no matter what. You should never let what was ruin what is.

5) Which is your favorite song from This is War, ABL and S/T?

6) What European city did you like most while touring?

I really enjoyed the UK, although it may have been the one place I could really just go out onto the street and explore. Travel days usually take a lot of time, and I’m not much of a bar/club hopper, so when the crew would go out, I’d usually stay in or do some sight-seeing around our hotels, exploring on foot. I did enjoy every city we traveled to, though. I wish we had more time in places like Poland and Italy (and not stranded at the Bologna airport)! http://goo.gl/fb/yQ20F

7) As for the next record, would you like MARS to continue This is War sound or go back to the original one like in the S/T?

See, this is the thing: I feel like This Is War embodied everything MARS has been between S/T, unreleased tracks, and ABL. It’s got layers and depth to it, synth and just natural guitar, and I feel it’s a great balance of the two main records despite the lyrical content not being as vague as S/T, or as personally emotional as ABL. It’s like they said – first they conquered the mind with S/T, then the heart with ABL, and TIW is about the soul/spirit. Whatever they choose to do next, I have faith in.

What memory has been stuck in your mind recently?

MARS-related? I think everything, in little bundles of memories. Different memories are triggered by songs, photos, things that come together when I least expect them to. 7 years is a long time, and although not as long as other people have been into MARS, I’d like to think I have a unique perspective of them – of all of it that is, seeing everything from not only a fan-perspective, but a working, professional one, too. The best part is that I can honestly say I still enjoy it all – the music, the fandom, everything even in its low-points. It’s been an incredible journey in all ways.

9) Pros and cons of the great success achieved by Mars in the last two years, from the perspective of a fan who has been following them since the beginning.

I’d love to say I’d been there since the beginning, but being there since “a” beginning, consistently over the years, is just as good, right?

Pros: Exposure for the music that allows more people to enjoy it, to find their own sense of footing and interpretation of it all. It encourages more creation all around, in art, thought, etc. It brings a lot of people together in ways that might not have been conventional for them before. It inspires a lot within people, and I think that’s special.

Cons: The judgments people will undoubtedly make, comparing their fresh work with the old, from people who don’t quite understand what symbolism and depth MARS’ entire universe really has and all the people who take part in it.

10) How is it working with people you admire artistically and personally, combining your two great passions, music and photography?

I can honestly say there are times where I’ll sit back, see the Band on TV or hear them on the radio, or when they come up on my iTunes, or I see a photo from a show, and I think to myself, “WOW.” There was no intent to get anywhere closer to them than from the front of the pit or brief meetings before or after shows, so you can imagine what it was like the moment I realized I could really help in some way, pool my interests and skills to help something and someone that I felt really sparked inspiration to broaden parts of myself in ways that needed growth. I’d always been open to sharing my designs and concepts with the guys, and in that, we gained familiarity with one another, so to later be approached to help with bigger, more serious things (like the 2nd Yearbook) was incredible to me. That was the first time my photos had been used for anything Official. From then on, it just all progressed, and I can honestly say that it has been so incredible in so many ways — for me as a person, an artist, a fan, everything inbetween. I’ve only taken one photography class in my life time and to be completely honest, my final grade wasn’t even that good.. haha! Whatever “skill” I have is mostly something I’ve just toyed with, using my “Eye” for shots and learning as I’ve gone alone. Music really helps fuel the inspiration, and thankfully MARS is a great muse when it comes to that particular part of me.

Can I add one more part to the bottom of the last question?

It’s funny — while in Brighton, Jared looked up between photos I was taking for the Golden Ticket Meet & Greets, and asked, “Where did you get that camera?” The random question took me by surprise and I answered, “It was an early Christmas gift from a good friend.” He half-smiled at me and said, “That’s serendipity.”

30 Seconds To Mars, Arcade Fire Lead MTV’s Musical March Madness

It’s finally here. After 12 solid months of endless debate, speculation, open campaigning and a whole lot of accusatory e-mails from Tokio Hotel fans, at long last, we have reached the tip-off of MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness tournament. Get ready for a bit of band bracketology that pits the 64 acts that matter most in rock against one another, with ultimate glory (and a really nice trophy) on the line.

So, after a yearlong wait, which bands got their golden tickets punched and which were left hoping for a lousy NIT invite?

If your favorite band made the cut, it’s up to you to get them through to the next round by voting for them early and often. You can do that starting Monday afternoon (March 14), when voting on first-round matchups begins on the Newsroom blog. Polls will remain open until midnight on Sunday, when we’ll reveal which bands survived.

But before you vote, you should probably acquaint yourself with the full field of 64 bands, which is why we brought in CSPN sports analysts Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice (a.k.a. Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez from Cobra Starship) to break down the 2011 MMM tourney in their own, uh, unique way.

Much like the actual NCAA tournament, our Musical March Madness runs until April 5, when we’ll unveil our grand champion — and it probably would help if you campaigned for your favorite band on Twitter, using the hashtag #MMM.

Of course, if a band you love didn’t make the cut, we hope you’ll still vote anyway. Or, at the very least, air your grievances in the comments below. And so, without further ado, let the Madness begin. Here’s a look at the 64 bands competing for the 2011 MMM title:

The #1 Seeds
Foo Fighters: Time-tested progenitors of meat-and-potatoes alt rock, the Foos land the #1 seed in the equally meaty (and potato-y) Midwest region. Dormant for a few years, they’ve returned with Wasting Light,, a take-no-prisoners missive that, they hope, will help them recapture past glories. With their long and storied history, the Foos are sort of the Musical March Madness equivalent of UCLA, which means Dave Grohl is MMM’s John Wooden. Can they add another championship banner to the rafters?

30 Seconds to Mars: Jared Leto and company grab the #1 seed in the West region thanks in no small part to the slow-burn success of their This Is War album, which, despite being released nearly 16 months ago, continues to churn out rock-radio staples. Angered by their controversial overtime loss to My Chemical Romance in last year’s Sweet 16 — and buoyed by a fanatic fanbase — 30STM enter the 2011 MMM with a sizable chip on their shoulders, making them capable of beating anyone, anywhere. They’re a bit of a hybrid band, adept at pounding the ball down low but more comfortable in the open court, which makes them like John Calipari’s old slash-and-burn Memphis squads, or San Diego State this year. Could this be the year they take the title?

Arcade Fire: Big-boned balladeers who bullied their way to a #1 seed in the erudite East region, the Arcade Fire enter the 2011 tournament as perhaps the nation’s hottest band, riding a winning streak that saw them score a #1 debut with The Suburbs and shock the world by snagging the Album of the Year Grammy from Eminem and Lady Gaga. Simply put, they’ve forgotten how to lose, a fact that, when coupled with their insane bench depth (since there are, like, eight people in the band), could make them the toughest out in the tourney. They most definitely run the Princeton offense, just in case you were wondering.

Linkin Park: Former bruising nu-metallers now reinvented as sonically adventurous artistes, Linkin Park nab the #1 seed in the South region (for reasons unclear, the Selection Committee decided to make them leave their West Coast enclave). Though they’ve certainly got the power and the championship pedigree, LP seem too frequently plagued by inconsistency — check the mixed reaction to A Thousand Suns — which is certainly a byproduct of their brave decision to remake themselves. Of course, it makes them like those old Bob Huggins-coached Cincinnati squads, or UConn this year. If they can put it all together, this is a dangerous band indeed.

Midwest
The so-called “flyover states” get a bracket positively brimming with rock-radio heavyweights bands, including the Foos, #4 the Black Keys, #5 Neon Trees, #7 Avenged Sevenfold and #9 Disturbed (broad generalizations are sort of par for the course in MMM). Last year’s champs, Coheed and Cambria, end up here as a shocking #6, and they’ll face a tough first-round test in #11 Crystal Bowersox. Other potential barn-burners include #4 Rise Against versus #13 Pete Wentz, and the Trees vs. #12 Patrick Stump, the results of which could lead to a second-round death match between two former Fall Out Boy mates. Not sure how Taylor Swift ended up as a #10, but she’s got her work cut out for her against Avenged Sevenfold. Possible sleepers? We like #3 Vampire Weekend, a band no one is talking about, even though they probably should be.

West
A bracket loaded with talent (for the second straight year, it’s probably the toughest field in the entire tournament), topped by 30STM but also featuring titans like #2 Blink-182, #3 Green Day, #6 U2 and #7 the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Panic! at the Disco/ Avril Lavigne matchup has all the markings of a classic, as does the 8/9 contest, which pits Pearl Jam against Train. Oh, and don’t sleep on #14 Adam Lambert, who proved in last year’s tournament that his fans definitely get out and vote. We actually like him as the favorite against Green Day. Other under-the-radar acts that could do well here, like #4 Florence and the Machine and #11 Ke$ha, both of whom are looking to win one for the ladies.

East
Last year, I described the East as “the intellectual enclave,” and in 2011, it still features plenty of bands that make the blogs go buzz — Arcade Fire, #2 Radiohead, #4 the Strokes, #14 Panda Bear and #15 TV on the Radio. But, for the first time, the East has also been inundated with brawling, rock-radio bruisers, including #3 My Chemical Romance (playing close to their spiritual home of New Jersey), #6 Cage the Elephant and #11 Rage Against the Machine. Who will come out on top? Our money’s on MCR, who made it to the championship game last year, though #12 Phish also advanced deep last year, and you’d be foolish to overlook the power of #8 Coldplay or the chart-topping prowess of #9 Cake or #10 the Decemberists too. Also, the Arcade Fire/ Sum 41 matchup — we’re dubbing it “The Battle for Canada” — should be an absolute barn-burner. Or whatever they call a barn in Canada.

South
An odd mix of bands actually from the South — the 4/13 matchup, which pits the Kings of Leon against Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, is basically the battle for Southern supremacy — bands who probably should be from the South (#6 Kid Rock, #3 Mumford & Sons), and bands that have absolutely no affiliation to the region whatsoever (pretty much everyone else). Still, the Selection Committee had to put them somewhere and, in doing so, has created a bushel-load of intriguing first-round matchups, including #2 Muse vs. #15 Cobra Starship, Mumford vs. #14 Tokio Hotel (our apologies in advance to Mr. Mumford and his Sons), Kid Rock vs. #11 Adele and #5 Paramore vs. #12 No Doubt. We honestly have no idea how this bracket is going to shake out, and we can’t wait to watch the carnage unfold.

Thirty Seconds To Mars reveal what rock fans can expect from their FLASH Forum show on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, as organisers FLASH Entertainment announce a sell out

With Kanye West and The Killers’ Brandon Flowers among their most famous fans, US rock band Thirty Seconds To Mars’ Yas Island gig at the FLASH Forum this weekend is an A-list approved event that promises UAE fans “the greatest time of their lives”.

The concert on Friday (March 11th) is part of the Yas Island Show Weekends 2011 and fans could be in for a major treat as the boys recently covered their very own acoustic version of Lady Gaga’s monster hit ‘Bad Romance’ during a Live Lounge session for the UK’s BBC Radio One – winning a trophy for ‘Ultimate Live Lounge Cover’! – and they’ve been featuring the track on the set list for their current world tour.

With their hugely anticipated collaboration with Kanye West on the track ‘Hurricane’ released late last year, UAE fans could be in with a chance of hearing the song Thirty Seconds To Mars’ frontman Jared Leto describes as “a collision of two worlds”. And given the band’s penchant for getting members of the audience up on stage for their epic ‘Kings & Queens’, fans can expect plenty of crowd participation too, with Jared telling MTV Asia: “We’re always inspired by our audience. We encourage interactivity.”

With a tour set list that’s packed with all the hits from their most recent album ‘This Is War’, including ‘Kings & Queens’ which won the 2010 MTV Video Music Award for ‘Best Rock Video’, ‘Closer To The Edge’ and ‘Into The Wild’ as well as tracks from their first two studio albums, the eponymous ‘Thirty Seconds To Mars’ and ‘A Beautiful Lie’, Jared, his brother Shannon and third band member Tomo Milicevic will celebrate their first ever concert in the Gulf before thousands of fans who are snapping up tickets to see the band who’ve won a massive 42 awards throughout their 13 years of performing.

With music critics at last month’s Soundwave Festival in Sydney, Australia bowled over by Jared’s ability to energetically “bounce around the stage” during the band’s performance, lead guitarist and keyboard player Tomo Milicevic also spoke out about the band’s impending Yas Islands Show Weekends 2011 gig at the FLASH Forum, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

“I know Jared’s been trying for a while to get to some different places,” he told Beat magazine. “For us, touring is… about the experience. We want to travel and we want to see different places, and if there’s people out there who want to have a concert experience with Thirty Seconds To Mars we’ll come there.

“We want to experience different cultures and just see what’s out there. We have this amazing opportunity to contribute to local culture in a way that’s unique, and we feel very lucky about that.”

So, what can the Gulf’s Thirty Seconds To Mars fans expect from the LA-based rock band’s first live show in the region?

“We just want to go out and give people the greatest time of their lives,” says Tomo.

It Only Takes 30 Seconds To Get To Mars- Review

Last night’s show was out of this world, almost literally! When Jared Leto is in charge, there’s no guarantees as to what will happen. It’s like he grabbed the world in his hand, threw it, and put something else in its place. Something even I can’t explain.

Last night’s show at Northern Lights proved that rescheduling a show three times does not matter to fans. It was a sold out event, and I think every single person showed up! There were people from Vermont and even Montreal that drove hours just to see 30 Seconds to Mars perform. I can’t speak for them, but I’m sure they would say it was well worth the trip.

One of my favorite parts of the night was two young girls who traveled from Montreal to be at the show. They couldn’t have been more than 18-years-old, and they made their own 30 STM shirts and drove over five hours. They also spoke French, and were so cute and friendly. We were told to invite some people from the crowd to the meet and greet, so I picked them due to their devotion to the band. They reminded me of myself, only a few years younger. The looks on their faces were priceless. It made me so happy to make their night.

There was only one opening band: California-based two-man band Middle Class Rut, made up of Zack Lopez and Sean Stockham in 2006. I give these guys credit for attempting to do what usually a group of four or five do, and sometimes duo’s make it really far, however I think they took on too much and tried to do too much. I think investing in one or two more members would help them out immensely. Their sound just seemed frantic and scattered, as frontman Lopez had to keep up with his vocals and guitar, while Stockham had drum and vocal duty. Since they are a duo, it would be more noticeable if they messed up as well. I think they would benefit from divvying up the musical chores than trying to take them all on themselves.

After a short intermission, the crowd’s wait was over, and they came on. Jared, Shannon and Tomo took the stage, and the aura changed. Everything was covered in white light; so bright that frontman Jared Leto wore flattering sunglasses for the first few songs. It truly was like a spaceship was about to land at any second. It was amazing, and the crowd went nuts.

Speaking of the crowd, many fans participated in what was called “white night,” where they dress entirely in white in support of the band. It also represents “carpe diem” and unity to 30 Seconds. (There have been other theme nights during the tour as well, such as “black night” and “Hurricane night”). It was really cool to see how many people took the time to deck themselves out in all white. It just added to the intensity of the white lights.

Jared Leto is a fabulous performer. I don’t even think I saw the other two band members all night due to the lights and my focus on Jared. He came out in sunglasses and with a jacket on, and eventually took them both off (it was a change from the black and white fleece snuggie he was wearing in the meet and greet!). He was also in white and at times even looked shirtless, which I’m sure no one would’ve complained about.

Jared was very interactive with the crowd. He often let them sing, as he would turn the mic around so everyone could hear them perfectly chanting together to the tune of the songs. At one time he even let a bunch of people up on stage with him. I’ve only seen this one other time (The Used!!) and he took his time picking people and making deals with them, for example the next five people who crowd surf will be the final five picked. He picked individuals out as well which I thought was awesome of him. “The kid with the black shirt, the one with the green hair, oh and you over there with the mohawk.”

30 Seconds played for about an hour and fifteen minutes, and played the following songs (not all are listed): “Beautiful lie,” “Attack,” “The Kill” and “This is war.” While Jared was joined on stage by fans, they performed “Kings and queens,” which I thought was appropriate, as each person up there probably felt like a king or queen. “From yesterday” and “Hurricane” were also done, but acoustically. They are not naturally acoustic songs, but they were amazing with just a guitar and Jared’s voice. The crowd went crazy all night, as did my mind and heart with admiration for this trio.

Reguardless of whether or not anything about the band or its name has to actually do with space of any sorts, watching 30 Seconds to Mars was really like being in another dimension, another world. Jared easily grabs the attention and minds of all in the room and brings them wherever he wants. I enjoyed it, and can’t wait to be taken to another world again someday.

1Mike Ragogna: Shannon, you’re still touring in support of your last album This Is War.

Shannon Leto: Yeah, we started in San Diego with two shows there, but now I’m back at home. It’s a sunny day in Los Angeles.

MR: Nice. Who are you going to be touring with and what cities are you visiting?

SL: We’re going to a lot of cities, and there are two parts to this tour. The first part, we’re having Middle Class Rut open up for us. Then we do a few dates here and we go to Australia. When we come back from Australia, we finish up the tour.

MR: Did you know at the time you were working on This Is War that it would generate so many singles?

SL: We knew we had something special going on during the recording process. During that process, for those couple years, there was so much going on. We were being sued for $30 million, a new president was being elected–it was a huge monumental time in our government–the world was melting financially… Those things really had an impact on the creativity on the record. I think if we didn’t go through those experiences, we wouldn’t have the album we have today. When we’re coming up with these songs, we’re not really sure of what the outcome will be because we’re so caught up in the moment, so we try to do as much in the moment and try to exhaust every idea.

MR: What is the creative relationship with you guys?

SL: It could start with a drumbeat, a guitar riff, a lyric, humming. Then we just put it down.

MR: You guys are constantly touring and Jared has had his acting career.

SL: We’re just trying to focus on what’s in front of us. My brother hasn’t done a movie in years, so he really just focuses on what’s in front of him, which is the music. We really don’t have much time off. We are always thinking about music, how we can do better and keep pushing ourselves to share the experience with people. It’s non-stop work.

MR: Plus, you guys recently had a deluxe edition of This Is War released.

SL: Yeah. The deluxe edition has this song “Hurricane” that’s on our album. This particular track has Kanye on it. And it also has a Lady Gaga cover. It’s nice, fun, and exciting to make records. It’s art and it’s another way to express yourself.

MR: So, this expanded release is basically an audio and visual continuation of the album.

SL: Yeah, and the artwork is really great too, my brother designed it. And there are some extra songs on there.

MR: What’s on the agenda as far as new releases? A new album?

SL: There could be, you never know.

MR: What advice do you have for new artists?

SL: Just follow your heart. Stick to what you believe in. Work hard, practice, practice, practice, and tour a lot. You don’t have to be on a major label to play out. You learn a lot when you play gigs. Many things form.

Music Review: This Is War by 30 Seconds to Mars on FHM

Following their well-publicized contract dispute with Virgin Records in 2008, 30 Seconds to Mars is now kicking it with their third full-length album This is War.

Like the title implies, many of the album’s themes focus on stories of war and death.
The power trio of Jared Leto—who played the role of Jordan Catalano in My So-Called Life, if you remember— Shannon Leto and Tomo Milicevic are five years removed from their previous album, and thus use this record as a testing lab for experimentation.
Among their new devices are the use of a choir on several tracks, and in some songs, sounds of a funeral march, which some of you may find a wee bit over-the-top.

The eerie and mysterious album opener “Escape” sets the theme for the record.

True to their Pink Floyd influences, Leto’s vocals fade in and out to an almost operatic vibe, yet the hint of guitar strums is unmistakably rock and roll.
“Night of the Hunter” features an interesting mix of power metal, trance, emo and ballad all rolled into one. It opens with a European woman’s voice immediately followed by a fast and heavy power metal-esque riff mixed with a hint of trance. It is in this track’s lyrical content that the band’s emo influences can be felt.

“Kings and Queens” and the title track “This is War” are more post-grunge/alternative in nature, sticking with the tried-and-true method of soft verses followed by a heavy chorus.

“100 Suns” is the shortest track on the album, clocking in at a mere 1:58. The song, an acoustic ballad powered by a choir background and Leto’s versatile vocal range, has that ability to soothe listeners in the manner that a Jack Johnson song would.
Leto’s vocal versatility continues in “Hurricane,” which mixes the acoustic vocal tone of the previous track with emo-style screams. Opening with a keyboard solo, the song explores themes of religion and death, asking the unanswerable ‘Where is your god?’
The next track is “Closer to the Edge,” whose funeral dirge opening is quickly sped up with the song’s post-grunge/emo ambience.

“Vox Pupuli,” derived from the Latin phrase ‘voice of the people,’ is by far the most epic song on the album, continuing the tone set by the opening track.
The song features a trance-like opening, followed by a choir group’s chanting. The ever-present choir blends seamlessly with Leto’s cries of war, as well as the fast guitar and bass riffs of Milicevic. Though pretty decent, “Search and Destroy” is perhaps the weakest track on an otherwise strong album. This song features none of the genre-breaking sounds of the previous tracks, instead sticking to an almost forgettable alternative rhythm.

The album then returns to its mysterious tone with “Alibi,” a track highlighted by a percussion and keyboard melody, made comforting by Leto’s soft vocals. “Stranger in a Strange Land,” a reference to Sci-fi writer Robert Heinlein, is the longest track on the record and is more progressive metal in nature, mixing silence and fast rhythm leading to a heavy climax.
The album then ends with the instrumental “L490,” a lullaby acoustic which ends in a church choir-style chanting, a fitting end to album’s theme of war. Whether intentional or otherwise, the song’s acoustic guitar sound is reminiscent of Metallica’s “The Unforgiven” from 1991.

This is War has been certified Gold worldwide, as well as going 2x Platinum in Portugal and it’s easy to see why. The album breaks the confines of genre classification, mixing in some vastly different musical styles to achieve a unique tone.
With this only being their third studio album, the band’s sound continues to develop and evolve, slowly breaking away from their musical roots and attempting to make their own stamp on the music world. However, with only three albums in over a decade and Leto’s budding acting career, the band needs to focus their energies onto their music, before their time passes.

DiS meets 30 Seconds To Mars: Is This The Final Countdown?

In a small and insanely overheated room, DiS is practically melting. Drummer Shannon Leto, on the other hand, is wearing a woolly hat, and guitarist Tomo Milicevic is wearing gloves. Jared's wrapped up too: with his head in his hands, the 30 Seconds To Mars frontman, video director, movie star and pin-up is nursing a cold that keeps him quite subdued.
Many other bands would have called an early end to their tour, but even in an absolute ton of crazy snow, 30 Seconds To Mars forged on from Birmingham to Aberdeen and back to Manchester – and even with a lot of the transport network grinding to a halt, so did a lot of their extremely dedicated fan base.
By show time later, poorly Jared will have perked up a bit and will run around the stage, commanding the 10,000-strong Manchester crowd like a giant game of Simon Says where we all just keep getting caught out. When he asks who wants to come on stage for 'Kings & Queens', people will be climbing on shoulders, screaming, waving backpacks and small children in the air: in desperate hope of catching his eye.
Think what you like of them: they're getting something right. But it's something, DiS learns, they may not be doing for very much longer.

How was the trip down from Aberdeen?
Shannon: It was fine. Slept like a baby.

Did you worry at any point that you'd have to reschedule?
Jared: We did. We didn't know if we'd make it to Aberdeen, the trains were closed, but we made it there. Then we didn't know if we'd make it here.

Was there a noticeable number of people missing?
Shannon: No, very few people didn't show up. The majority made it.

Do you enjoy that you have pretty mental fans?
Tomo: Yes.
Jared: Definitely.

I heard you were outside earlier giving them hot chocolate?
Jared: Yeah. We gave them some hot chocolate.

Your new video for 'Hurricane' has been banned on most TV networks. How surprised were you?
Jared: I think we were all pretty surprised? It's not something that we'd talked about, the possibility of it getting banned or restricted. We knew that we'd have a version of it that'd probably be played on the internet and a version for broadcast, but I was pretty surprised the version we sent to broadcast is the one that got banned. I can't imagine what they'd have said if they saw the other version.
We got pulled off of MTV again just this week because they found a couple of shots that they didn't notice before. So it's been pulled off and we've got to fix it again. Or not.
It's an interesting thing, the debate over protecting viewers. The idea that they need to protect the viewers versus the expression of artists and art. It's a good debate to have. It's a worthy conversation.

How did the idea for that video come about?
Jared: It really was born as a result of the song, and I remember in the studio talking about sexuality and the expression of sexuality through music and how it's generally left to the pop mavens, albeit in a very commercial way most of the time. It's not a territory that we'd explored before, so I was thinking as a writer that it was an interesting place to head toward.

Does it bother you that people might associate your band more with the visuals than the music?
Jared: No. No. Because without the music there isn't the visual. It starts from the song, in our case. But a lot of the songs are very lyrical and very cinematic themselves, so there's a lot of imagery that's going on while they're being written as well.

You sell Golden Tickets for your shows [so fans can meet and greet the band, get autographs, watch from side of stage and other such perks]. What made you decide to do this?
Jared: You know, it's interesting because it's a little bit of a hot topic, but it's really providing a service that people want. When it comes down to it, there's a lot of very happy people as a result of us deciding to do it. So it's been a pretty pleasant experience so far.

Do you worry about the fans who are essentially out-priced of that?
Jared: No, because we're very accessible as it is. From Twitter to the shows, we're a really accessible band, and we've also paid attention to what people want, and we try to provide as much as we can.

Have you started any work on the fourth album?
Jared: No. Who knows if there'll be a fourth album.

Does it feel like the end of the line?
Jared: In some ways it does. In some ways it feels like the end of a cycle or a trilogy or something...

So what do you think might be next?
Jared: I don't know, but it certainly should be a new beginning, if at all. Not to be fatalistic or anything. It just feels like this is a... like there's a starting point here, maybe.

Which of your videos are you most proud of?
Shannon: I like them all. And they were all done very differently from each other.
Jared: They're really much more like sculptures than anything. And I don't mean that in a pretentious way, but they're sculptures with images and the way that they're built and there are people sitting around watching how they're made. They're kind of uncovered as they go. It's been a hand in hand process as we're touring and making these things.

Are there plans for more videos?
Jared: Nah. 'Hurricane' was three or four months in total, in the making. So that's it. I have an idea for one more. There might be one more from this album.

Are you having a break for Christmas?
Tomo: Short one, yeah. Couple of weeks off. We play a show on New Year's Eve in Vegas, which is going to be really fun, and then we'll start rehearsal for our US tour, which starts on the 11th in San Diego.

Have you got a favourite album of 2010?
Tomo: Hard to say. I like the La Roux record, but I don't know if I'd call that a favourite. It's fun...
Jared: Fever Ray's record is good.
Tomo: Oh, you know who's record is awesome that just came out a few weeks ago? Kid Cudi. It's really good. It's awesome. It's amazing. I was pretty shocked. It's really good.

...It looks like the build-up to the premiere of 30 Seconds to Mars' new music video for "Hurricane" has resulted in a letdown after the clip was banned.
If banter between band members on the internet is any gauge, it seems "The Man" has deemed the roughly 20-minute-long epic too raunchy for TV.
In a Twitter post, band member Tomo Milicevi also says, "The Internet is still restriction free. The "Hurricane" film will be seen." He also added "Don't blame MTV peeps" after fans turned their frustration on MTV. "They are not 'The Man'. It's the man above 'The Man'."

30 Seconds To Mars have a lot to live up to with their video for "Hurricane." With their last video, "Closer To The Edge," the band took a huge, cinematic leap forward. With hundreds of members of The Echelon featured, stunning globe-trotting cinematography employed and breathtaking performance footage captured, "Closer To The Edge" has made it official that every subsequent 30STM video will be an event. So with each release now, they're going to have to come with something special.

Frontman Jared Leto had told MTV News that the clip would be "a surrealistic nightmare dream-fantasy through the desolate empty streets of New York City at night." And, with this brief sneak peek of the "Hurricane" video, all I can say is it looks like that mission will surely be accomplished.

Via rapid jump cuts, we see the following: gorgeous cityscapes, some freaky-deaky S&M masks, a half-naked Jared Leto (who looks like he's been putting at least 10 minutes into the whole six-minute abs thing), Shannon Leto riding around on a motorcycle, some Lady Gaga-esque women in PVC nun habits, some more freaky deaky S&M action, a bunch of religious imagery, some cockroaches and, of course, more near-naked Jared.

Whew! And that's JUST a 30-second sneak peek! The only thing that could make us more excited to see "Hurricane" is if it featured a Kanye West cameo, like their live performance of the song at the MTV EMAs did. But based on what we've seen, we won't be complaining.

Jared Leto meant business when he popped into Pacha the other night and asked to be led into the club dancers' private dressing room. Sources tell us the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman showed up at 1:45 a.m. and explained, "He was there to personally cast one of the dancers in his next music video. He lined them up in the dressing room, asked them to show off a few moves, and decided on a young Russian blonde who couldn't believe her luck." A rep for Leto didn't get back to us.

There has been no shortage of adjectives used to describe 30 Seconds To Mars' upcoming "Hurricane" video, including "sexual", "ambitious", "shirtless" and, strangely enough, "wacky". So naturally, when VH1 cornered frontman Jared Leto on the set of the clip and asked him to explain the concept behind it, he went into adjective overdrive.
But you really can't blame him. After all, at this point, there seems to be no other way to adequately describe the thing.
"It's a surrealistic nightmare dream-fantasy through the desolate empty streets of New York City at night," Leto said. "There's no people, there's no cars and you see the band as we encounter some fears and some fetishes, a series of challenges. ... It's a really ambitious, really cinematic short film."
And though "Hurricane" is primarily an exploration of his bandmates' deepest, darkest desires, Leto is quick to point out that New York itself plays a rather sizeable role in the video, too. In some ways, it's a rather twisted love letter to a city he loves.
"We have, probably, 10 different locations over these two-and-a-half days that we're shooting," he said. "We shot at Central Park earlier today, yesterday we were downtown, we were shooting on a street called Chambers Street, really beautiful, turn-of-the-century buildings, the day before that we were in some alleys ...
"Shooting in New York is an amazing experience; you have everything from simple things like the cobblestone on the streets to magical things like the people, personalities, the individuals," he continued. "I love the history here and it's been a city for me that's always been about finding your dreams."
And though "Hurricane" is about as adjective-heavy as you can get, Leto isn't concerned about being overwhelmed by his own ambitions. Fitting them all into a rather hectic shoot schedule, on the other hand, is a different matter altogether.
"I think the biggest challenge for me will be time," he said. "You have so many things you want to do and you're so excited about doing them. ... They say it's not the time it takes to do the takes, it's the time between the takes that takes the time."

I often wonder what it must have been like on these streets at the beginning of this amazing city. NYC has to be one of the world’s most amazing places, if not THE most amazing. It truly does inspire and will definitely enhance the dreams of anyone who spends time here. I mean, can you think of another place on earth where you can look to the left and see two business type dudes walking and talking about numbers and stocks, while coming in the other direction is a chick in a rubber cat suit on a leash, being pulled around by a guy wearing a gimp mask? And then walk right past each other as if that IS normal. Maybe it is … Who are we to say what’s normal anyway, right? I just absolutely love everything about this place and how it makes you feel inside. It makes you want to do something special, something meaningful.
If the fountain of youth exists, the NYC streets may very well be its source. I know that every time I come here, I leave feeling refreshed and revitalized. There are not many places other than your own home that can do that for a person, but this is one of them. I’m thankful — and grateful — that NYC exists, and I’m even more grateful and thankful that I get to spend so much time here.
This truly is the greatest city in the world…

Grammy award-winning rock act 30 Seconds To Mars stops by to answer a few questions Just weeks after walking away from the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards with a moon man for their “Kings and Queens” video, 30 Seconds to Mars will be riding into Kent State.

Jared Leto, Shannon Leto and Tomo Miličević will take the stage Friday at the M.A.C. Center.

Kelley Stoklosa: What was the inspiration behind your new album, “This is War?”
Tomo Miličević: Well there was a lot of things that were going on in our lives and in the world at the time we were trying to make a record. I suppose that in that sense the main theme in that record was conflict. There was all this craziness going on all over the world and in our personal lives that conflict was this reoccurring theme in our lives.

KS: How was it working with Steve Lillywhite and Flood (Mark Ellis) on this album, compared to working with Josh Abraham on your last album?
TM: It’s as different as could be, honestly. Josh has his way of doing things. He does things that are completely and totally different than Flood. Flood and Steve are both very hands on as producers. They both want to be there day-to-day with the band just being creative. While Josh, great in his own right, takes a more hands off approach. He kind of lets the band do their thing and comes in once and a while, takes a listen and gives his opinion on what’s going on. Then you go with that and you do what you want. You can change your mind and you can work by yourself. So, it’s two very different things. Flood and Steve were great. It was a dream come to true to work with those guys. We are talking about two of the most legendary producers in the game. Arguably they are the best in the business. So it was very cool. Most of our favorite albums were made by one of those two guys.

KS: What is the best part about touring?
TM: It’s hard to describe. It’s what we do. It’s who I am. It’s who we are. We are a group of people who have worked their entire lives towards this ability to travel around the world playing music for people and have this shared experience. It’s tough to pick one thing we love about touring. I suppose I just love the opportunity to perform. I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to do it. I’m fully aware that there are people out there that would kill to do what I do for a living so I suppose it is just being great full for the opportunity. This could all be over tomorrow. We have no preconceived notions of what we are entitled to.

KS: Congratulations on your Video Music Award for best music video. Did you get a good look at Lady Gaga’s meat dress while you there?
TM: Not only was I close, I was three rows behind Lady Gaga’s meat dress. So yes I did get to see it up close and personal, and no it was not real meat, except for the headdress as far as I’m aware. I think the one she wore on that magazine was real, but the dress was a very well made rubber suit.

30 Seconds To Mars get set to release Kanye West collaboration

When rapper Kanye West announced last April that he was producing a track for 30 Seconds To Mars' album This Is War, it's safe to say it raised a few eyebrows even among the most die-hard of The Echelon.
Unfortunately, the jury's still out because West's version of the track Hurricane wasn't completed in time to make it onto the band's third album. However, frontman Jared Leto has told MTV News that this "phenomenal" collaboration will see the light of day very soon.
"Let's put it this way: It's a collision of two worlds, and I think it's a completely unexpected surprise," Leto told the US TV station. "He's not only on the track, but he's phenomenal on the track... It's one of the strongest things that he's done, in my opinion."
"It is a song that's on the darker side of things," he continued. "It's the flipside of Kings and Queens - which has a through line of optimism and hope, and a really strong spirit to it - this song explores a different territory, and his lyrics do the same. His singing is incredible on it, and he's done a lot of really wonderful work, and I think this only adds to his work as a whole. Working with him was an incredible experience."
Leto also adds that he hopes West will be available to feature in a video for the track, too.
"I think that would be an interesting element to add for sure. We'll just have to see."

Lots of bands talk about wanting their concerts to be a shared experience with an audience, where the fan feels connected to the band and as much a part of the show as the musicians on stage.

Few groups have achieved this goal as fully or as clearly as Thirty Seconds to Mars -- which will be looking to enjoy that symbiotic relationship Saturday at the UCCU Center arena at UVU.

Prior to recording its current hit CD, "This is War," the band's singer/guitarist Jared Leto invited about 1,000 fans from all over to Hollywood's Avalon Club, where he recorded them humming, shouting, screaming, clapping and otherwise making noise. That event prompted Leto to hold eight more of these "summits" in cities across the globe, and later invite fans to submit recorded sounds through the internet.

The results of this experiment can be heard throughout "This is War" as arena-size vocals from fans accent several songs.

Now concert audiences have been taking the cue from the "This is War" CD, chiming in with their hands, voices and feet at the points in songs where crowd sounds had been placed.

"They're like stomping, chanting and clapping, just like the recording," drummer Shannon Leto said during a late-August phone interview. "So it's definitely an experience that's exciting to be able to share."

As for the band's own performance and stage production, Leto (he's Jared's brother) likes how things have come together on stage as well.

"The show is really ... it's chaotic, it's energetic, it's madness," he said. "I mean, it's like my brother used to say, 'It has the energy of the Sex Pistols with the grandiosity of Pink Floyd.' I always liked that."

The Leto brothers and the other member of Thirty Seconds to Mars, Tomo Milicevic, deserve to be having fun these days.

The couple of years that preceded the release of "This is War" weren't always pleasant. One source of discontent involved the band's relationship with its label, EMI/Virgin Records.

The label sued Thirty Seconds to Mars for $30 million, alleging that the band had failed to fulfill its contractual requirement to deliver three CDs.

The suit was settled out of court in 2009, but not before both the band and the record label hunkered down for an all-out court battle. As part of the settlement, the band is forbidden from discussing details of the agreement or the issues that caused the two sides to rattle sabers. Leto did, however, deny that there was any dispute over royalties, saying that, "We just weren't being treated fairly" and "We just had to stand up for what we believed in."

In any event, it's clear the dispute took a toll on the three band members, and the "This is War" title of the latest CD relates in part to the lawsuit -- although its meanings go well beyond that for the band.

"We were being sued for $30 million. The world was melting down financially," Leto said. "There were a lot of changes going on and a lot of challenges, obstacles, and we were at war in a sense."

On top of the dispute with Virgin, the three band members were also attempting to essentially reinvent the Thirty Seconds to Mars sound. Working out exactly how the music was going to evolve was not an easy or entirely peaceful process.

"When you're trying to push yourself and trying to do something different, you know, there are emotions and feelings that pop up," Leto said. "And I think that during the making of 'This is War,' there was a lot of that going on. I mean, we were pushing each other all the time to try things new, and just life, on life's terms, period, there was a lot of that going on, a lot of life stuff, a lot of situations. But the record encapsulates everything that we went through. This record is a record that captures each of our personalities pretty well. And it gives a direction for where we're going to go with the music. Boy, what a crazy time."

That said, there were plenty of good times during the recording sessions as well, Leto said. And getting to work with the primary producer on the album, Flood, was another highlight for the band. Flood, as many know, has produced U2, as well as Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails.

Interestingly, the music on "This is War" has a more than a little of the anthemic U2 sound to it. But Leto was quick to say that the musical and sonic direction of the latest album was a full team effort, and not merely the influence Flood had on the project.

"We were all working together," Leto said. "We had a direction we wanted to go in. We had an idea of what we wanted. And Flood came in and he was a perfect match for what we wanted. We all had the same vision. We had all of the songs written and he came in and he did his mad scientist experimentation, if you will. Yeah, I can't give anything away. It's a Flood secret. But, yeah, we had the most amazing time working with him. It was a milestone. He's a genius."

The sound that Thirty Seconds to Mars and Flood crafted is a notable shift from what the band has presented earlier in its career.

The Leto brothers had been playing music together for years by the time Thirty Seconds to Mars was signed by Virgin Records in 1998. When the 2002 self-titled debut CD arrived, it featured a sound that blended edgy yet melodic guitar rock with electronics, resulting in a somewhat futuristic feel.

At that point, the band got much of its attention because of Jared Leto's success in another line of work -- acting. He had gained considerable attention for roles in such high-profile films as "The Panic Room," "Fight Club" and "Alexander," and some assumed 30 Seconds to Mars was mostly a vanity project for him.

But that talk died down as it has become apparent that Jared Leto was focusing his efforts on the band.

By the time the second CD, "A Beautiful Lie," arrived in 2005, Thirty Seconds to Mars had grown into a full-fledged band with the addition of Milicevic and since-departed bassist Matt Wachter.

"A Beautiful Lie" saw the group scale back on the use of electronics and employ a leaner guitar-centered, hard rock sound. The new sound connected in a big way as the CD topped a million copies sold in the United States and produced a chart-topping alternative rock single in "From Yesterday" and a top five alternative rock hit with "The Kill (Bury Me)."

Now with "This is War," Thirty Seconds to Mars has reinvented its sound once again, scaling back on the gritty guitars and aggressive beats, employing a good number of synthesizers and other electronic candy and going for a more spacious, anthemic -- and yes, U2-ish -- type of sound. The sound works well, and "This is War" is becoming the band's biggest CD yet, with "Kings and Queens" and the title song both having topped the alternative rock chart.

The emotional ups and downs that went into the album make the current success that much more sweet, Shannon Leto said.

"It feels really, really good because you never know what is going to happen," Leto said. " We were just kind of doing what we've done. And what's really nice is when you do that and it's successful, the feeling is something that it's special."

KINGSVILLE — Shannon Leto has never heard of a javelina.

"So they’re, like, little vicious things?” he asked. “I hope I get to meet one.”

The 30 Seconds to Mars drummer should get to meet thousands, more or less, when the band rocks out Wednesday night at Texas A&M University-Kingsville as part of the mtvU Campus Invasion Music Festival.

The free concert is expected to draw at least 2,000 people to the rural campus, based on the 1,500 free tickets given away to students and 300 reserved seats sold so far, said A&M-Kingsville spokeswoman Julie Navejar. Because general admission is now open to anyone with or without a ticket, the crowd should be even larger.

The band received the 2010 MTV Video Music Award for best rock video on Sept. 12 for the song “Kings and Queens,” so getting the Kingsville stop on the mtvU tour was a major coup for a university revamping itself as place where students want to live rather than just visit on the weekdays.

“We’re hoping students have a sense that this little campus tucked away into a rural community is capable of big things,” said Terisa Remelius, vice president for student affairs.

New dorm building dedications are becoming a yearly routine, and even with the newly opened, modern, apartment-style dwellings, enrollment has grown so quickly that some have no choice but to live in hotels, shuttling back and forth to campus.

The Kingsville date is the only show 30 Seconds to Mars has planned in Texas following its Video Music Award. The band plays in Oklahoma City on Thursday before touring the Midwest.

Wednesday’s concert gives Texas fans a chance to join in the unique relationship 30 Seconds to Mars has with its followers. The band frequently invites fans onstage to form what it calls the “Church of Mars.” Dozens of fans in costumes rode bicycles with band members as they entered the Video Music Awards. Hundreds participated in chants and songs for album recording sessions. Two thousand fans had their faces plastered on copies of the most recent album, “This is War,” and more fan photos cover Leto’s drums.

“We’ve always been interested in the people that are listening to us, and it’s always been a shared experience ever since the beginning,” Leto said. “From the first show where we played to three people at the beginning, we would go out and talk to those three people, and it grew from there.”

Leto, who founded the band in 1998 with his brother, Jared Leto, said that at age 40, he derives energy from the crowd, trying to eat healthy and drinking tons of coconut water. He also tries to work a surprise into every show.

“Maybe we’ll have a bunch of javelinas,” he said, before backtracking and emphasizing the “maybe.”

“I don’t know, say, like 50 of them on stage, and they’re wearing Army gear. We’ll put helmets on them.”

..Based on what Jared Leto has already told us, 30 Seconds to Mars' upcoming "Hurricane" video is going to be "very, very sexual," and may feature a cameo from Kanye West.

What else can Leto tell us about the video? Well, since he's still planning it, there's not a whole lot more he's willing to reveal, but he does have a concept that he's more than happy to discuss. A dirty, dangerous one.
" 'Hurricane' as a video, like I said before, is going to be very, very sexual," he said. "It's basically a meditation on the violence of sex, and the sex of violence ... and it's going to be quite an adventure."
It sure sounds that way. Of course, there's still a long way to go before the band even starts shooting the clip — trying to schedule the thing in-between dates on their Into the Wild Tour is proving to be quite the challenge — but Leto is determined not only to get it done, but to make sure it lives up to the rather epic standard of the band's earlier videos, including the VMA-winning "Kings and Queens" and the soul-saving "Closer to the Edge."
And while the stress of pre-production has left his voice a little ragged (that and the singing), Leto says not to worry: Not only will "Hurricane" happen, it's going to be the kind of video 30 STM fans have come to expect from the band: very, very big.
"We're in the midst of plotting and planning right now ... my voice isn't worn out just because of the singing; it's been a really intense time, without much sleep," he said. "[The] 'Hurricane' video is shaping up to be quite an undertaking. We may be shooting in New York City and it's a very ambitious project."

Last year, when 30 Seconds to Mars were still laboring on This Is War, more than a few eyebrows were raised when Kanye West posted a photo on his blog of him, Jared Leto and the Killers’ Brandon Flowers in the studio, where the trio had apparently just finished recording a “dope-ass song.”
Later, Leto explained to MTV News that the “dope-ass song” was called “Hurricane,” and it featured West singing, minus the Auto-Tune he’d been dabbling with at the time (there was no mention of Flowers’ involvement). It sounded like a promising collaboration, but, sadly, fans never actually got to hear it: When This Is War hit stores, “Hurricane” was on there, but West’s work wasn’t.
Leto explained that the band had to remove Kanye from the track at the last minute, due to some rather restrictive deadlines and a lot of back-and-forth between record labels, but he and his 30STM mates were so impressed with West’s contributions that they pledged that someday, somehow, the song would see the light of day.
And, as it turns out, they kept their promise. On November 2, 30STM will release a deluxe edition of This Is War, featuring a DVD, a pair of live tracks recorded for the BBC (including a version of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”) and, at long last, the full, Kanye West-ified version of “Hurricane.” It’s been a long time in the making, but, as Leto told MTV News on Friday (September 24), the song is worth the wait.

A deluxe edition of This Is War will be released on Nov. 2nd. The deluxe album will include a new version of the single “Hurricane” featuring Kanye West, their live versions of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance and Kanye West’s “Stronger” for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge and bonus DVD content (full track listing below).

In their acceptance speech, the band dedicated the award to their fans that they call the Echelon. Thirty Seconds To Mars has always been known for their dedication and interaction with their fans. To launch This Is War they created the innovative Faces of Mars campaign, in which they called on friends, fans and other notable persons to submit photos that were used to create over 2000 individual album covers. The fan participation contributions did not stop there, events called The Summit were organized in 9 different countries around the world, and then expanded to online, The Digital Summit, where fans were invited to record a variety of sounds, choruses and verses to be used in the album. Their efforts can be heard on various tracks throughout This Is War. Their latest video for “Closer to the Edge” is also a dedication to their fans.

The presenters of the Best Rock Video may not have known what it’s like to be rockers, but they sure met a few when they awarded 30 Seconds to Mars with their win at the 2010 Video Music Awards. The California band’s video for “Kings and Queens” earned them their first Moonman of the night, beating out Florence and the Machine, MGMT, Muse and Paramore.
“Thank you. This is amazing. This award really doesn’t so much belong to us. It belongs to the most amazing family of friends and fans around the world that we could’ve have ever imagined,” frontman Jared Leto said while accepting the award.

“We’re happy to accept it on their behalf. Thank you to MTV. Thank you to our label, to our management company. We’re really proud to be here, proud to share it with all the other artists. It’s been an amazing adventure, so thank you,” they continued.

Immediately after walking offstage, the band posed for a photo with “Jackass” star Chris Pontius … who was trying to fit his penis into a mouse costume. Then, they told MTV News how it felt to win.
“I am so grateful … I truly didn’t think we would get it,” Jared Leto said, beaming. “When I heard Paramore’s name, I thought we wouldn’t get it for sure,” guitarist Tomo Milicevic added.

“Honestly,” Leto continued, “right now I feel so humble and so grateful.”
Their Bartholomew Cubbins-directed clip features a legion of bikers making their way through the streets of Los Angeles at night.
In addition to their Best Rock Video win, the group is also nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Direction and the night’s coveted Video of the Year award. The band previously snagged the MTV2 Award for their video “The Kill” in 2006.

Roughly an hour before 30 Seconds To Mars strode onto the VMA stage to humbly accept their award for Best Rock Video, they walked the white carpet outside the Nokia Theatre, where they were just as humble, if not slightly agog by everything happening around them.

“We’re feeling good, kind of amazed,” 30STM frontman Jared Leto told MTV News. “Really, this is all a surprise to us. We’re just happy that people are responding to the work; this whole thing has been fun and crazy and chaotic.”

While they were wide-eyed by all the VMA action — and an ill-advised “glitter bomb” that took place at the top of the carpet — they were ready to discuss business … namely, how they would follow the VMA-winning video for “Kings And Queens” and the jaw-dropping live clip for “Closer to the Edge.”

From the sound of things, they’ve got a pretty good plan.
“The next thing you will see is the completion of [the live film] ‘This Is War’ finally,” Leto said. “And a new video for a song — this is a scoop — for a song called ‘Hurricane.’ [The video] is very, very, very, very sexual.”
We imagine members of 30STM’s Echelon will be very excited to see both of those things, and we suspect fans of Leto will get behind anything involving him and the word “sexual.” There’s no word on just when the band plans on filming the video for “Hurricane,” which at one point featured a cameo by Kanye West, but we’ll definitely keep you posted.

Jared Leto was out for a big of fun and he had that fun at Undercover.
Leto was in creative mode as he made his way through an Undercover interview with 30 Seconds To Mars and role-played his questions around the Black Crowes t-shirt Undercover`s Tim Cashmere was wearing.
While the first part of the interview makes little sense (they even juggled their own names for the opener), Jared the actor smothered out Jared the rock star with his creativity. “Here we are at High Times magazine with our favorite host Stoner ‘Stoney’ McGee” he started off. Then Stoney become ‘ Henderson the Bong Bratwurst’.
It confused the hell out of our interviewer as Jared changed names mid-sentence but it did lead to a very funny and entertaining view of Jared Leto when he isn’t being controlled by Hollywood spin doctors.
Jared was joined by his two other 30 Seconds To Mars mates, his brother, drummer Shannon Leto and guitarist Tomo Milicevic.
The interview includes a little redneck improvising with Jared on guitar so I guess there is a 30 Seconds To Mars hidden redneck rarity somewhere amongst these ruins.

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards are fast approaching, which means that in only a few weeks you'll be treated to an excellent night of performances and appearances by the likes of Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence and the Machine, B.o.B and Deadmau5 (who will serve as the house DJ at the show). While people tend to remember the classic performances and the unhinged moments, the coveted Moonman is the reason why people show up and tune in. This year, there are 16 categories wherein some of the biggest music stars in the universe will compete for the coolest trophy in awards shows. Today, we take a look at the nominees in the Best Art Direction category.
The MTV Video Music Award for Best Art Direction might be the most esoteric of all the Moonmen handed out, if only because it's so difficult to quantify what makes great art direction. It's a measurement of overall excellent, with the most colorful, visually creative, aesthetically stunning clip usually taking the prize. That will be easy this time around, as the five videos nominated in this category all create incredibly deep worlds that feel completely lived-in and thoroughly thought out, whether they are based in relative reality (the abandoned streets of Los Angeles in 30 Seconds to Mars' "Kings and Queens"), highly stylized alternate worlds (Beyoncé's "Video Phone") or fantastic dystopias (Eminem's "Not Afraid"). Those three clips will get competition from Florence and the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over" and Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance."
In the past, the winner of Best Art Direction typically contains visual cues that have rarely been seen in the past. For example, Gaga's "Paparazzi" took home the prize in 2009, as that clip featured sets, costumes and effects that were fully integrated into the narrative and the vibe of the song. Other past winners include Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Dani California" in 2006, Outkast's "Hey Ya!" in 2004, Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream" in 1995, Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" in 1994 and Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" in 1987.
Based on those past winners, it seems like the video that goes the most over-the-top is destined to win, which is why Beyoncé's "Video Phone" appears to have this one in the bag. But she could easily see a challenge from "Bad Romance" and "Dog Days Are Over," as both of those clips are visually striking and seem to created entirely different universes in which the artists can explore and play. To find out who reigns supreme in the Best Art Direction category, you'll just have to watch.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 for Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

Exclusive Interview: Jared Leto, Thirty Seconds to Mars

When Hulu spoke to Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto about the band’s latest video last week, he was calling from the beach in Tel Aviv, where he and the rest of his band were set to play another show on their world tour. By now, 30STM has played in more than 100 cities across the globe, hitting Europe, Sydney, Singapore and Japan in just the past few weeks. (It’s been so many, Leto’s lost count himself.)

Of course, the band isn’t adverse to travel. After all, many of their previous videos were shot in exotic locales, including China (“From Yesterday“) and even the Arctic (“A Beautiful Lie“). Their last video, “Kings and Queens,” however, was shot in their hometown of Los Angeles, with Leto calling it his “love letter to the city of Angels.”

Although their latest video, “Closer to the Edge,” isn’t as cinematic in scope, it was an epic undertaking, a video documentation of their “adventure around the world,” says Leto, who rocked a pink Mohawk in this video (it long gone now). And while some so-called “road videos” may depict the highs and lows that come with life on tour, “Closer to the Edge” is all about the fans as real kids talk to the cameras. “I picked people out at different shows,” Leto says. “I have 20 to 30 hours of interviews and filtered it down to make this video.” The singer teamed up with a group of five video editors and a pair of cameramen to piece together the video on what they called the “edit bus.” “We’d shoot days and work all night, until 5, 6, 7 in the morning. It was inspiring,” he says.

As for the song’s success, it’s been a bit of a surprise for Leto and his bandmates. “It seems that it has connected with our fans, and the fact that it managed to push “This Is War” to the top of the iTunes charts in Germany — knocking out Eminem, in fact — is just another thing for this modest band to be grateful for.

The band’s tour continues overseas for a few more weeks, then it’s off to Mexico before kicking off their U.S. tour and making an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards next month, where Leto and his bandmates are nominated for four “Moonman” statues. “We’re happy to be nominated. We found out in New Zealand and it was such a surprise. Winning would be one of those great moments for us as a band. What Ever Happened To 30 Seconds To Mars' 'This Is War' Video?

On Monday, 30 Seconds to Mars premiered the epic video for "Closer to the Edge," a far-reaching, all-encompassing affair that was shot in 89 cities in 27 different countries on the band's Into the Wild Tour.
Featuring emotional interviews with 30STM fans, copious amounts of thunderous live footage and an inspirational "We are family" message, "Closer" is certainly everything the band's so-called Echelon could've hoped for, and probably a little bit more. But the release of the clip also raises a rather interesting question: Whatever happened to 30 Seconds to Mars' other big-idea, even-bigger-scope music video, "This Is War"?
After all, "War" was the second single released off the band's album of the same name, peaking at #1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and even cracking the Hot 100. And back in April, 30STM frontman Jared Leto spoke at length about the accompanying video, which saw the band don military fatigues and brandish real assault rifles as members of a combat battalion on patrol in the desert. Working with director Edouard Salier, Leto said that 30STM hoped to create a thoroughly epic clip that explored "the inevitability of conflict, the blessing of conflict, and what we can learn from it.
"A lot of people are going to interpret this piece in a lot of different ways," he added. "And hopefully it will start some debates and some conversations."
Leto was clearly enthused, and so were his bandmates, even going so far as to send MTV News a series of behind-the-scenes pictures taken on-set. And though there was no firm release date for the "War" video back in April, Leto said that 30STM had shot it before kicking off the U.S. leg of their Into the Wild Tour, presumably with the hopes of having it completed by the time that run of shows wrapped. In mid-March, the band released a pair of teaser trailers for the video, promising, "The War Is Coming."
And yet, "War" still hasn't come. 30 Seconds to Mars have finished the first U.S. leg of their tour, and will begin a second run of stateside shows next month. And considering the release of "Closer to the Edge," it would seem that everyone has forgotten about the "This Is War" video. Everyone, that is, except for Jared Leto.
Earlier this month, when MTV News spoke to him about 30STM's four Video Music Award nominations, we asked him about the status of the "War" clip, and just why it was being held up. And though he didn't go into great detail about the nature of the delay, he assured us that the video will still see the light of day, somehow.
" 'This Is War' has taken so long that I shot, edited and finished another video before it was even finished," Leto said, referring to "Closer to the Edge." " 'This Is War' is the first video that I let someone else direct, and let's just say we won't be doing that again anytime soon. It's a work in progress. We're still working on it, and it's like we're waiting for the kidney ... it's on the helicopter, on ice, and as soon as we get it, we're going to rush to surgery."
So, the short answer is: Leto and Co. are still working on "This Is War." The long story, well, it sounds a lot more involved than that. A spokesperson for 30 Seconds to Mars' label, Virgin/EMI, did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on the "This Is War" video. And an email to Salier seeking comment was not returned by press time.

The brothers Leto—singer/guitarist Jared and drummer Shannon—return stateside this fall with lead guitarist Tomo Miličević to deliver more spacewalking rock from their popular power trio Thirty Seconds to Mars. Along for their interstellar ride is the popular crowd-sourcing project called Faces of Mars, where fans can upload their mugs onto the cover of limited-edition copies of the multi-platinum band's latest effort “This Is War,” released last December.
Meanwhile, awaiting them in the United States are four nominations for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, to go along with their various trophies from Kerrang! and others, as well as a string of No. 1 hits like “Kings and Queens" and “This Is War.” So, what do you give the band that has everything? A short, sweet chat with Jared Leto about Kanye West, tweets from Iran and more.

You went crowd-sourcing with the Faces of Mars campaign, by pulling fans into the creative process online and in a real-time gathering called “The Summit.” Are you raising an army to take over Earth?
The Summit was a really exciting and creative endeavor. It was great to do something interactive and include our fans. We ended up doing the first one here in L.A., and about a thousand people showed up from all over the world. It went so well, we did it in eight other countries around the world. It was phenomenal.

What impact did that social engineering experiment have?
It really added something special to the songs. One day, I got a Twitter message from someone in Iran who was disappointed because they couldn't make it to any of the global summits that we did. That gave me the impetus to do a digital version of the summit, where people could participate from anywhere.

How you did tech it out?
We utilized TwitVid and Twitter and some other technologies to have this interactive platform where people could record and experiment and be a part of this new album. That led to Faces of Mars, which is the idea of putting the faces of 2,000 friends and fans from around the world on 2,000 covers of the CD.

Is Kanye West's mug on there? What was it like working with him on "This Is War?" [Ed. note: West's contributions to the track "Hurricane" were removed due to label conflicts.]
I had actually brought up the idea of working with West some time ago, and it’s great that happened. He came by the studio, and we did some initial kind of listening, and he did some singing. We needed to kind of follow up and finish things, so I went to Hawaii with an engineer and a small crew and wrapped it up.

Do you think he gets a bad rap? Pardon the pun.
He was a pleasure to work with. Easygoing, nice, and really hospitable. I think what he did on the song is some of his most interesting singing to date.

Any thoughts on your evolving sound? I'm hearing it compared to everyone from Pink Floyd to the Killers, who I've never heard together in a sentence before.
Ha! I don't think I have either, and I doubt it will be said again anytime soon.

If you had to objectively describe your sound, you'd say…
It's always been an experimentation for us. We always look for the opportunity to grow, to develop, to change. For "This is War," I wrote the songs over a period of about two to three years and found that this is us. It's is a collections of our thoughts, our dreams, our nightmares, our hopes, and our lives

“It would be very interesting if we have a video clip taken at the tropics yes. We’re thinking about it,” says Jared Leto, the vocalist, while chatting with us, recently.
For 30 Seconds to Mars, a video clip is described to convey the message in the song. That’s why they always want to deliver perfect video clips.
All video clips of 30 Seconds to Mars look very mature. Call it the song ‘Close to Edge’, ‘From Yesterday’ and ‘Kings and Queens’. Is there any script other video clips of their dreams?
“We want to create video clips with the concept through the boundary dimensions. Like jumping into a time machine or where to visit various places around the world,” explained Jared.
In the event the MTV Video Music Awards 2010 which will be held Sept. 30 Seconds to Mars won four nominations. It’s all thanks to video clips of ‘Kings and Queens’.

After the nominations for the 2010 Video Music Awards were announced on Tuesday (August 3), most of the attention focused the fact that not only did Lady Gaga pick up 13 nominations (an incredible, record-breaking number) but that she was also nominated twice for Video of the Year (once for "Bad Romance" and once for "Telephone"). Since it's the most high-profile category on the show, the race for Video of the Year will provide the most drama and intrigue until the show airs live from Los Angeles on September 12. Gaga's competition is an eclectic batch of clips, including Florence and the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over," B.o.B's "Airplanes," Eminem's "Not Afraid" and 30 Seconds to Mars' "Kings and Queens."
Of all the contenders, it's possible that 30 Seconds to Mars might have the best advantage. Since Video of the Year is one of the nine categories that is decided by fan voting, it will be up to the Internet masses to declare which artist created the video of the year. When the MTV Newsroom Blog took a look at 30 Seconds' to Mars' "Frame by Frame" segment for the "Kings and Queens" clip, we asked fans to weigh in on 30 Seconds' to Mars' chances for the win in the comments section and on Twitter (both @mtvnews and @kylemtvnewsroom), and their army of fans — who are dubbed "The Echelon" — responded with aggressive enthusiasm.
"'Kings and Queens' deserve to win," wrote commenter SisterOfHeresy. "This video is a sort of [an] escape for each one of us. Not all the videos are so strong like 'Kings and Queens.' Not all the videos give you what 30 Seconds to Mars have given you." Twitter user dreamsfight agreed. "'Kings and Queens' should win because it's one of the deepest and most awesome videos I have EVER seen!"
With the support of their online community (who gave the band a crazy push during this year's Musical March Madness tournament), 30 Seconds to Mars have a good shot at throwing a few curveballs and causing a few upsets at this year's VMAs.

No doubts about it, THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS are a band well equipped for a live performance. Frontman and vocalist Jared Leto exudes confidence and personality, commanding attention from everyone in his presence. His brother Shannon Leto, towers above his drum kit, hitting with a passion and power which is hard to ignore. And guitarist Tomo Miličević is the glue which holds them together, spending a lot of time off to the side, but allowing his guitar skills to shine bright.

Playing to a sold-out Logan Campbell Centre in Auckland, Thirty Seconds To Mars with opening act COMPUTERS WANT ME DEAD had the audience up on their feet and singing along at a volume unprecedented for any Logan Campbell show to date. Computers Want Me Dead, comprised of Sam Harvey and Damien Daniels, built up hype and energy playing their synth fuelled electro-pop - including singles ‘In Your Blood’ and ‘We Walk In Circles’ - which created a miniature indoor rave, complete with glow sticks.

However, it was when the lights dimmed and Shannon Leto emerged from the smoke to tower over his drum kit and began playing the opening beats of ‘Escape’, that the Logan Campbell Centre truly came to life. The band promised a show of epic proportions, and already you could tell they would deliver on that promise. Having travelled their ‘Into The Wild’ tour all across the globe, the stage-show was very well rehearsed - the lighting was well timed to the moods of the songs, going from a pulsing strobe to low-lit mood lighting with ease. ‘Night Of The Hunter’ saw Leto emerge on stage, running around from one side to the other, engaging the audience with his confidence and undeniable talent.

‘Attack’ - the opening track from their second album 'A Beautiful Lie' - had the audience in a frenzy and was the first of only five tracks in their set which don’t feature on their latest album 'This Is War'. However, fan or non-fan of their latest album, it has to be said that songs such as ‘Vox Populi’ are well-designed for a live setting. The backing choir vocals accompanying their latest album were perfectly re-enacted by the audience - and as the band paused midway through ‘Search And Destroy’ to encourage a sing-a-long it was hard to deny the band's ability to inspire and ignite crowd passion

A flawless and energetic performance of ‘A Beautiful Lie’ was followed by their latest single ‘This Is War’, during which a competition winner by the name of John took to the stage with his guitar to live his 'Guitar-God' dream, performing the song alongside the band as the 'hometown hero' of the night.

The night then took a softer turn, with Jared Leto taking up an acoustic guitar and playing softer track ‘100 Suns’ accompanied by his band-mates, before he disappeared from the stage only to re-appear at the back of the venue at the sound desk to perform ‘From Yesterday’, ‘Was It A Dream?’ and ‘Alibi’, accompanied only by his acoustic guitar and the voices of the crowd. It was during these three songs in particular, where Leto’s voice was on full display and any doubts about his vocal ability were nullified.

Fighting his way past the mob of crazed fans to run back on to the stage, the band blasted their way through ‘Closer To The Edge’, encouraging the audience to mimic those seen in their video for the song... and so, the Logan Campbell Centre became a crowd of fist pumpers screaming "no no no no" - all captured by the band's videographer for a “New Zealand version of the video”. Jared then made yet another fan's dream come true by commenting on his pink Mohawk with a simple “cool Mohawk brother”, followed by a rain of confetti falling upon the audience for the closing moments of the hit single.

Ending the main portion of their set with ‘The Kill’, Thirty Seconds To Mars proved themselves to be well-seasoned musicians who really do give their all in a performance. Jared jumped into the crowd to finish off the track, before the band departed the stage. Chants for an encore immediately started, and the screams were deafening when the band reappeared on stage for their final song ‘Kings And Queens’, accompanied by the Church Of Mars (made up of competition winners and fans plucked from the audience by Jared Leto) assembled on stage.

If you missed the show, the band made a “public declaration” that they “will return to New Zealand” - and when they do return, I highly recommend that you attend. High energy, high passion, and an abundance of talent, proved that Thirty Seconds To Mars deserve all the credit and praise that they get, and cemented their place at the forefront of their genre.

Jared Leto 'Blown Away' By 30 Seconds To Mars' VMA Noms

Jared Leto was probably the last person to learn about 30 Seconds to Mars' Video Music Award nominations. After all, it was already Wednesday morning in New Zealand (16 hours ahead of us here in the U.S.) when he got the news.
"I was in Auckland, and I woke up after a long slumber, looked over to my BlackBerry, and noticed that the red light seemed to be flashing with an added urgency," Leto laughed. "So I reached over and quickly found out that this was a day that would go down in history for this little band of ours."

And rightfully so. After all, 30STM racked up four VMA nominations — more than any other rock act — with their "Kings and Queens" clip, including nods for Best Rock Video and Video of the Year. And immediately after learning the news, Leto reacted somewhat appropriately.
"I was completely blown away. It was so unexpected that my first reaction was, 'Holy f---ing sh-- f--- f--- f---!' " he said. "We had no idea this was the way these things worked. It was the furthest thing from our minds. And then someone sent me the list of artists we're nominated with, and we couldn't believe that either. It really is exciting."
Leto wouldn't speculate on his band's chances of taking home a Moonman — "It truly is an honor just to be nominated," he said — but in a lot of ways, he feels like he and his bandmates have already won. After all, the success of "Kings and Queens" not only came after a lengthy battle to get their album made, but it was born out of a collaboration with the band's fans and friends. So the VMA noms are vindication, and they give Leto an opportunity to once again thank everyone who's helped them along the way.
"We're so proud that a video that was an epic experience for us was recognized, because making it was a creative and beautiful journey that we still talk about fondly," he said. "It's a celebration, because it gives me a chance to say thanks to everyone who means so much to us, largely our fans, but everyone else who has supported us. It hasn't always been this way for us. We've had to work so unbelievably hard, and we couldn't have done it without some help."
